bargrooves: black

bargrooves: black

Black is the 100% proof version of bargrooves – deeper, with more than just a hint of tech-house, and packed with a lot of punch. This album is definitely not for the faint hearted but is perfect at 4.00m when you really don’t want to go to bed!
--
This CD represents a new addition to the bargrooves stable of single-CD special collections. As much a personal indulgence as by popular demand, we have produced ‘black’: The 100% proof, take no prisoners, no holds barred, ‘hello captain!’, single CD of deep, tech house and a dash of progressive.
bargrooves ‘black’ is without doubt the absinthe of the bargrooves series – where we normally soundtrack a sweet cocktail of funky, jazzy, soulful flavours, black is pure cane spirit – and then some!
Bargrooves ‘black’ will definitely be for those 4am moments, and we don’t mean deep sleep!

bargrooves: manhattan v.15

bargrooves: manhattan v.15

Mixed by bargrooves’ own Ben Sowton and dons of the NYC house music scene, Mateo & Matos, this double CD release brings together the finest quality funky house, interwoven with touches of vocal and latin house. Standout tracks come from Jay-J, Blaze, Joe Clausell, K-Klass with Rosie Gaines, Audiowhores, Ultra Nate and Masters at Work, plus three unreleased tracks which are exclusive to this album.
--
"Packed with killer hooks and quality vocals, this is the best house mix to grace our stereo in months!" (iDJ)
--
"Another treat for connoisseurs of deep yet funky house music. 5/5" (Update)
--
"bargrooves manhattan really is dance music's cream of the crop." (RWD)
--

Disc one of manhattan is compiled by Ben Sowton, founder of the bargrooves series. Paying his dues to favourite producers Jay-J, Richard Earnshaw, Grant Nelson and Physics, Ben’s selection is refreshingly a touch more vocal than is typical of his deep, jazzy sets. Highlights include two of Seamless Recordings’ own works, namely the Souldoubt mix of Soularis’ ‘Freeway’ and the original of Ross Couch’s ‘I See You’. Perfect examples of how to use musical hooks to stunning effect.

Taking inspiration from the dancefloors of Manhattan such as Cielo and Bungalow 8, experienced Big Apple producers Mateo & Matos have been chosen to provide the all important guest mix. A chance for bargrooves to show off its influences and friends – a chance that they make the most of.

Showcasing three of his own productions, the inspiration for Eddie Matos’ music is clearly Latin, jazz and deep house which plants it very firmly in the melting-pot tradition of New York City. With credits reading like a who’s who of NYC house music, their selection is very much the real thing. Blaze, Master At Work’s Louie Vega, Joe Claussell, and Jon Cutler rub shoulders with the very UK producers they have inspired such as Phil Asher, Knee Deep and Bobby & Steve - a nod to their trans-Atlantic cousins.

The first in the new quartet of bargrooves releases following the theme of Taste and Tastemakers, this is a fabulous sequence of great music that sparkles with taste.

“A firing selection of funky rhythms and jazzy movements to please even the most jaded clubber” Keep On Magazine
--

bargrooves founder Ben Sowton’s reputation for the perfect finish precedes him. Whether he’s setting up a members’ bar, record label or indeed executing a DJ mix, Ben’s specifications are top drawer. He is the constant behind the bargrooves brand. His mixes are powered by tight, driving rhythms, light jazz touches and perfect head-spinning chords.

Here on the first disc of mimosa, he hand picks fine tunes from across continental Europe and the States before heading back to Blighty with the well-respected sounds of the Urban Torque and Club Sole labels. En route he makes pit-stops at some of the East Coast’s most reliable bastions of house music namely West End records, Soulfuric and Subliminal’s more organic sister label, Subliminal Soul. bargrooves connoisseurs need look no further.

Disc two introduces the first guests in the Taste & Tastemakers succession. The Groove Junkies are New York’s Evan Landes and Detroit’s Parrish Wintersmith, two musicians/DJs who have partnered together through a mutual love of soul, funk, jazz, gospel and Latin rhythms. Their passion for these warm, life-loving sounds shines through their first mix for bargrooves. Continuing its travels through ‘spaces in special places’, bargrooves now arrives at the heart of Mediterranean nightlife. A life of luxury, pleasure and perhaps even a drop of self-indulgence acted out beneath a blanket of stars on a terrace wrapped in little but the best house music.

Ben Sowton is a champion of music tailor-made for such hedonism. Here he once again establishes his credentials as a knowing selector of other-worldly dance music. From the opening moments of Louis Botella’s ‘Cuba Libre’ to Miguel Migs’ ‘City Sounds Part One’ via Souldoubt’s ‘Work It’ (signed to Seamless and exclusive to this album),, Ben leaves no one in any doubt that his is a mix to lose yourself in. This album distils the essence of the world’s best bar soundsystems into the perfect aural cocktail, to be consumed at leisure in your own private space. This is house music with a distinctly French feel – top tracks come from the Soldiers of Twilight, Norm Talley, and Astro’s ‘In the Moonlight’ which is completely exclusive to this album.--“Perfect for urbane barflies” Elle Decoration--The follow up to al fresco, and the second in the new bargrooves quartet of ‘spaces in special places’, the espace privé collection doesn’t disappoint. This time, label boss Ben Sowton teams up with French DJ, scribe and editor of Cod@ Magazine (France’s dance music bible), Frédéric Messent. Whilst each CD has a definitively individual feel, the two selections are united in their dedication to deep house music of the highest quality. All the usual suspects are present and correct: Om, Circulation, Serial, King St, and Guidance, rubbing shoulders with some lesser-known gems such as Norm Talley’s sublime ‘Change’ and Eres’ ‘Venga Bailar’ – a slice of balearic sophistication which perfectly reflects the spirit of the launch party for this album, to be held at Warhol in Ibiza Town.
